Accelerated Reader KS2
Learning to read is a skill we all want for our children, so it is only natural that we spend so much time in the early years reading to our children and encouraging our children to read with us. However, as our children progress through Primary school into KS2 we often neglect this essential skill because we believe they have become 'independent' readers. It is true that children develop excellent decoding skills throughout foundation stage and Key Stage 1 but our job after this stage is to enable them to 'interact' with the text rather than just 'reading' the words on the page. Developing these good comprehension skills are what makes children 'lifelong' readers. The Accelerated Reader programme was devised to help children to develop these comprehension skills through a system of reward and motivation. Children in St. Brigid's receive points for successfully completing quizzes relating to their AR books. These points are accumulated into 'class' points and the class with the most points is rewarded with extended play time or, on a termly basis, a whole class treat. It is a fantastic programme which, whilst expensive, pays off by creating children who love to read! Please encourage your son/daughter to make the most of this resource by reading lots and being dedicated to completing quizzes on their books. Ask your children about the book they are reading, the genre, the characters, the setting, the plot and the themes. Their ability to answer questions about the book tells us if they have really engaged with it and if they understand it at a high level. A 'good' reader is created when they are encouraged to immerse themselves fully in the book they are reading. Let's work together to create these type of readers.
