Abstract Self Portraits 📸

4th Oct 2020

First, we looked at abstract art, the children identified that the artwork were basically lines and shapes. We discussed how this type of art focuses mainly on lines, shapes and colours and didn't show a 'picture' of anything specific. We studied artwork by various abstract painters (Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Joan Miro).

Next, the children drew lines and shapes with pencil and then went over them with an oil pastel/crayon and began painting using water colours. The children explored mixing colours and seemed very excited when they made a new colour.

I took a photo of each child, inviting them to pose however they wished- I loved the variety. Then I printed each photo in black and white and we spoke about how the photos of them stood out against their abstract background.

Finally, the children wrote short sentences about themselves- what they liked, their hobbies, how many are in their family etc.
